Hey R2R!

This one I've personally been waiting for! Probably our most comprehensive look at how to light an SPS reef tank, to date.

In this one Ryan approaches lighting for the BRS/WWC System from four different components; appropriate PAR range; even distribution; the correct spectrum; cohesive uniform spectrum.

I 100% agree! Diffused LED's is the way to go. No bulb changes and IMO it gives you a look somewhere in the middle of LEDS and T5.
Out of all the lighting setups i have tried so far multiple Radion XR15's with diffusers has been by far my favorite setup!

FINALLY! Someone admitted we need to leave the toys alone!

I honestly think there is a market for a few preset spectrums on diffused LEDs and not even have an app. Just a rotating switch to switch spectrums and a brightness knob. Much like Kessil but on a panel light.

No storms, no clouds. Just really good quality lighting.

It's called an Orphek. LOL.

Funny thing is, black boxes have been doing the "Innovative" panel design for years.

Pop on a diffusor panel and viola!
I dont want Orphek. I want kessil to make a panel light

I also vote for the Orphek on the E170. @randyBRS, did you guys consider using 10 of the Kessil A360X's on the 750? If so, what made you choose the XR15's over the Kessils?

You would “for sure” have success with 10 360x’s :) but there are two reasons we didn’t go that way. Radions are where WWC has been producing success and this is the BRS/WWC method. Simple and stable means sticking with what works as much as possible.

Second, the Kessils have the best spectrum blending of any non diffused led and related to that the best shimmer. However the softened shimmer from the diffused options is the most appealing and closest to the gold standard of halides softened by T5’s.

Can I buy sheets of diffuser material for DIY led lighting projects or are these diffusers specifically made for each light? For example a sheet the size of the Orphek Atlantic and attach it to the bottom.

I am going to experiment with this over a diy light and a black box.

I dunno? That new kessil x looks pretty nice! Wide angle, but still all densly packed under a single lens puck. I voted no. I hope that the future of led goes smaller but with better lenses that spread the light further out. If they can continue to increase output and spread, we may all have 1 to 3 small led fixtures lighting up our big sps dominant tanks one day!

I think I'd try something like these. Keep in mind they all look like frosted sheets of plastic but I can tell you I have tried many and they have very different properties. You can also fund them in smaller quantities for pretty cheep.

Wide variety here.

This was a great episode.

I am selfishly glad you choose a 120G 4' tank as the baseline as I have two of them currently cycling for my new system.

One will be clownfish harem tank and the other wall to wall SPS so the guidance here helps validate/support my already planned/purchased approach for both - thanks for that!

The harem will be a 48" T5 hybrid with 2x Kessil A360 and the SPS tank a 48" T5 hybrid with 3x XR15 Pro's. The latter is an exact duplicate of one of the recommendations and the second is a blend of 6 XR15 recommendation with T5s. I just really like the blanket of light of T5s.

I have a rented par meter on its way from you all to do the par testing to validate height/etc. to get everything in the right ranges. I look forward to having the lighting done, measured/validated with the meter and your videos and then 'set it and forget it' when it comes to the settings to match the WWC AB+ modified spectrum & program.

I vote yes to an extent but I believe the future will be micro leds like those found in oled displays ultra thin flxible and cool running making it possible for the lighting to be built in to a lid/cover on the tanks
